How To Make it in The Music Business |

|
by Dr. Janet Nepkie Jim Halsey, author of How to Make It In The Music Business, was the very successful agent and manager of The Oak Ridge Boys. He guided their career, as well as the careers of Roy Clark, Tammy Wynette, Reba McEntire, Roy Orbison and many, many others. Jim is also a man with a mission. He wants everyone who reads his book to learn about the Power of Performance which each person has within him. Halsey's advice seems simple enough. "Make a list of your goals, and write them down so that you can see them often. Learn to focus on those goals. Write down the steps to follow to accomplish your goals. And have a purpose for your goal." Jim gives lots of comfortable reasons for his advice. Jim uses his own extensive experience to explain what music business people actually do to promote a musician's career. Here is some of the information that Jim Halsey shares: What does a manager really do? 1.) Builds the artist's support team and gets it in motion. 2.) Plans the artist's career, chooses the projects, builds the organization, and provides motivation for everyone. What do you need to be a good manager? Jim writes that a good manager needs good "ears", intuition, respect for the artist and team, and heart. Many people are a bit confused about the difference between a manager and a booking agent. Part of the confusion may arise from the fact that some managers do some booking until their artists become successful enough to hire a booking agent. Jim explains that the booking agent must offer a good project and create a good image for the artist. The agent must identify potential buyers for the artist's talent, make the call to the buyer and close the sale by convincing the buyer that the artist will fill the buyer's need for a specific sound and performance. The book also includes a glossary of music industry terms, a contact list of 100 radio stations with Local Talent Shows, disc manufacturers, music business workshops and conferences, extensive lists of professional associations, artist managers and booking agents. When you plan with a purpose, set your goals and follow your dreams, success will come. And remember to always offer respect and expect it in return. |
